The gentle hum of the coffee machine filled the small kitchen. Thomas poured himself a cup, inhaling the rich aroma with a sigh of satisfaction. The morning light cast a warm glow across the room, illuminating the scattered newspapers and the half-finished crossword puzzle on the table. He felt a deep sense of calm, a pleasant weight settling over him.

"Remember when we tried to build that treehouse?" Ben asked, wiping his hands on a towel.

Thomas chuckled. "Oh god, yes. I thought we were going to die. We built the thing on a slope. It was like climbing Mount Everest every time we wanted to get in."

"I thought it was the most sturdy thing ever built," Ben said, a grin on his face. "I distinctly remember it being perfectly level."

Thomas choked on his coffee. "Level? Ben, the nails were sticking out everywhere. We almost impaled ourselves multiple times!"
